I was at the WirelessEdTech 2011 meeting last week organized by Chris Dede and Julie Evans. Great conference. Lots of Industry and School Administrators and not too many educational researchers. It was great to get the other perspectives. Shirley Malcom, AAAS and Jim Shelton, Department of Education had a wonderfully candid panel and so did four major school superintendents. They all said that this is the time for a major transformation in what we think of as learning environments. Money should be invested in innovation and transformation. Thomas Carroll said there is no time left for re-trenching we need to build a new system.
I am very excited. I have heard learning science and game designers talk like this – but now people in schools and in Washington DC are talking this way! We may actually go somewhere with this effort.
